Weaving together Indigenous and non-Indigenous perspectives, bridging systematic gaps, addressing generational divides, and creating awareness for service providers to work with respect, integrity, and understanding when serving Indigenous people.
Larissa Jackson is of Indigenous decent (First Nations) of the Cree People (Nêhiyawak) of Treaty 6 Territory in Canada. She is a Social Worker with a decade of experience across various human service sectors. Her focus has been on understanding the intricacies of systems affecting Indigenous people and communities, while identifying gaps in services and comprehension. She has had professional roles both on and off reserve and in public, private, and non-profit, sectors.
Personally, Larissa grew up on a reserve, is an Indian Day School Survivor, and her parents and grandparents are Residential School Survivors. She has an experiential understanding of living in an assimilated community with a family that preserved and practiced traditional knowledge. She has learned how to walk in two worlds while remembering who she is and where she came from.
Corine Kozuchowski is non-Indigenous and has worked in a professional capacity serving the Indigenous population for just about two decades via a variety of roles and settings. Much of her career has been spent in the addiction recovery field as well as community corrections. She has held professional roles both on and off reserve and in all areas of service (public, non-profit, and private). She currently provides counselling to individual adults in private practice as a Registered Psychologist. She also coordinates experiential cultural learning opportunities for psychologists and other therapists.
Personally, Corine has been learning experientially from Indigenous Elders since 2009. Since that time she has been walking in two worlds and is connected to a number of Indigenous communities throughout the province of Alberta in Canada. She is also the partner of a Residential School and Indian Day School Survivor.
